There are 3 ways to heat your domestic water:

Tank Style - options include gas, oil, electric (heat pump) *This is the most common
Tankless - gas or electric *gaining popularity
Indirect - requires a hydronic boiler

Research has shown that the most efficient method (energy consumption) is a tankless water heater. If your electric rates are low and/or you have a solar PV system this is a no-brainer. Second on the list is a indirect fired water heater. If you have a hydronic boiler for space heating - consider this contender. Your boiler would need to be configured with additional piping and electrical components to add a super insulated tank - creating an "additional zone". Instead of a thermostat for a zone in your home, the tank has an "aquastat" which senses the water temperature inside the tank. The bad part of this setup, if the boiler goes out - not only do you not have heat for your home - you also lose hot water.

Finally, we have the tanks! No, not those huge war machines the military uses - I'm talking about tanks that heat water and store it. There are basically 2 types. One type uses a fossil fuel like natural gas, LP or oil. The other type is electric - whether it has electric heating elements inside the tank or heat pump water heaters.

Just for general discussion, lets compare a gas water heater vs. a gas tankless.

Gas Fired Water Heater like: https://amzn.to/2OWmZiR which we commonly install
Pros:
1. as a direct replacement - most cost effective for initial investment
2. replacement generally takes less than 3 hours for most plumbers & professionals
3. relatively zero maintenance - yes, you should drain/flush the heater annually and in some parts of the country - replace the anode rods as needed
4. If your electric goes out, you still have hot water (generally)

Cons:
1. pre-determined amount of water
2. not energy efficient

Gas Fired Tankless Water Heater like: https://amzn.to/2NiZDTO
Pros:
1. endless hot water (as long as you dont exceed gallons per minute)
2. lower operating cost
3. convenience of use
4. space saving - especially if you have limited space for a tank

Cons:
1. no electricity, no hot water - unless you have a generator
2. initial cost of investment to install is higher.
3. more complex installation process
4. requires annual maintenance - you can do this yourself or hire a professional.
Considering an electric tankless water heater - I've installed this model or a similar model for my clients: https://amzn.to/3bdIkLO

Considering a gas tankless water heater? We generally install Navien. Like this model: https://www.navieninc.com/products/npe-240a
