"Preparing for a ground assault on the Al-Faw peninsula, the enemy has brought their equipment to a deserted area in the northern area of Al-Faw and they are bringing in more equipment. But our forces have forced them to halt. Now, our forces in Al-Faw (region) are defending (gunfire starts in background) the city of Faw, together with members of the Ba'ath party and all the Iraqis (civilians) present in the city. The enemy is bringing more support and supplies and equipment, but our forces are still defending the city, protecting the city up to this minute."
STORYLINE:
During a live report from Baghdad on the 'Arabiya' satellite television channel on Friday, Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Said Al-Sahaf made an impromptu stop to invite channel staff to see damage caused by Friday's allied bombing raids over the city.
At a news briefing by the Iraqi Defence minister some three hours earlier, the gunfire and the sound of bombs exploding, was clearly audible.
Defence chief Sultan Hashim Ahmed said Iraqi forces have forced the allied troops movement to halt in the Al-Faw peninsula. He outlined what he claimed was fierce resistance to the allied invasion by Iraqi forces and civilians in the Al-Faw peninsula and particularly in the city of Faw itself.
