(78) Sealing Acrylic Pour Paintings That Had Silicone with a High Gloss Varnish with Sandra Lett
This is a video just showing how I seal my canvases. Your painting must be thoroughly dry and cured. I first sprinkle either baby powder or corn starch on canvas. Rub it in all over. Then wipe down with a damp paper towel (I prefer Viva brand). Then I take a damp paper towel and put a drop of Dawn dish liquid on it and scrub the canvas to remove any silicone. Then wipe off all soapy residue with another damp paper towel. Then dry the canvas well.
f needed, use a blow dryer to make sure all moisture is gone.
Then you use a sponge brush to apply varnish. I did the smaller canvas with DuraClear Gloss Varnish (it is a bit thicker). I usually just do one good coat on smaller canvases that are less than 12 inches. Then on the large one I used Liquitex High Gloss varnish.
I apply one coat vertically. Allow to dry. Then apply a coat horizontally. Allow to dry. Then another coat vertically. Usually 3 coats is great. You can apply more coats if you want a much thicker glossy effect. I store my used sponge brush in a sealed Ziploc bad between coats without rinsing. This keeps the sponge from getting worn out and weaker. The brush will last usually a few weeks like this to use many times over. This is just the way I do things. I know some people have different methods. Also Minwax Polycrylic Gloss is just about the same as Liquitex HIgh Gloss Varnish as far as the overall look and the watery quality of the varnish in the can.
