Ruzanna Nahapetjan – “Bac mez Ter” (Open to us Lord) - a traditional Armenian prayer
Ruzanna Nahapetjan - soprano
Bac mez Ter (Open to us Lord) is a medieval Armenian spiritual song. It is sung during the Door opening ceremony (in the evening of Tsaghkadzor) at the end of the Great Lent (also called Karasnortk in Armenia). After forty days of fasting, the people gather at the pre-closed doors of the church, and sing ‘Open to us Lord, open to us the door of mercy, that we may read to You in mourning’, after which the doors open and those present enter.
The great Komitas also composed a Bac mez Ter. His version is an a cappella soprano solo. Alongside the Armenian folk songs, sacred music equally occupied the attention of Komitas. His masterpiece Patarag (Liturgy), written for the male chorus, is the highest peak of Armenian sacred music.
Ruzanna Nahapetjan and the "Garuna" quartet during the concert at the 17 april 2005 in the Pieterskerk in Leiden (Holland), in commemoration of the Armenian genocide.
