Construction of north China's Xiong’an New Area has been in full swing with 120 major projects making steady progresses.

In April 2017, China announced plans to establish the Xiong'an New Area, located about 100 kilometers southwest of the country’s capital Beijing, aiming to build the 1,770-sq-km area into a green city featuring innovation and a national model of high-quality development.

In Rongdong area, a major residential space of Xiong'an, over 85 percent of the nearly 1,000 planned buildings had been roofed by the end of March. The buildings, which are designed to accommodate about 170,000 residents, will be ready for handover by June.

"We carry out interior and outdoor finishes, as well as landscaping at the same time, to ensure the smooth progress of construction," said Ran Xu, a project manager of the Phrase 2 project for China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd.’s Xiong'an G2 residential building project.

Large-scale construction projects are also underway in other areas of Xiong'an, such as Rongxi, Xiongdong, and Zangang.

An intercity railway linking Xiong'an and Beijing started operation last December, slashing the commute time between the two cities from 90 minutes to about 50 minutes. Meanwhile, three express lines linking Xiong'an, Beijing, and neighboring Tianjin Municipality are scheduled to open to traffic in May.

Xiong’an aspires to become a green city with harmonious human-environment interaction.

Between 2017 and 2020, Xiong'an added more than 27,000 hectares of trees, raising its forest coverage to 30 percent.

All-out efforts have also been made to restore the ecological environment of Baiyangdian Lake, an important wetland in the region.

Thanks to restoration efforts, the lake has expanded to about 290 sq km, and the water quality of its central area has improved from Class V, the worst level in China's water quality grading system, to Class IV, the best water quality Baiyangdian has seen in the past decade.

"You see, the water quality of Baiyangdian is much better, and the number of fish is increasing. In the past, the water was contaminated, and there were no fish. Cormorants would not go down since the water was stinky," said Zhu Jianxin, a villager from Dadiantou Village.

Infrastructure construction is also proceeding smoothly at Xiong'an's start-up area, which will be part of the Xiong'an city proper. Designed to take over Beijing's nonessential capital functions, the start-up area will serve as a new home for Beijing's colleges, hospitals, business headquarters, and financial and public institutions.

Since its inception, Xiong'an has been designed to become an intelligent city featuring high-tech innovations, as well as a magnet for global talents.
Xiong'an New Area Digital Transportation Lab sits in the start-up area. In less than six months after its establishment, the lab attracted more than 30 intelligent manufacturers as well as a large group of researchers from Beijing University of Post and Telecommunication and Qinghua University.

"Xiong'an will provide a good research and development environment and a good application environment for partners in the digital transportation industrial chain, helping them to grow stronger and stronger, and promoting the digital transportation system to the entire nation," said Ren Dakai, director of Xiong'an New Area Digital Transportation Lab.

Xiong'an also keeps improving its business environment to allow more enterprises to join in its development.

At present, more than 3,500 enterprises have registered in Xiong'an, of which more than 80 percent moved to the area from Beijing. According to official data, many of them are in fields of scientific research, software development, information technology, and technological services.

According to the Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035, China will build Xiong’an New Area to a high-standard zone, while speed up construction, and facilitate an innovative management system in the new area.

"We will follow the new development concept in building a demonstration zone, speed up the building of infrastructure and enhance public services, and attract various types of talents, innovate our system, and develop a new height of modern industrial systems as well as science and technology innovations. We'll strive to build Xiong'an into an innovative city and mark a good start of the New Area's construction in the 14th Five-Year period,"said Wu Haijun, deputy director of Xiong'an New Area Management Committee.
