Paul Esswood, Elizabeth Gale. Handel, Oh Fariest of Ten Thousand Fair, from Saul

Oh Fairest of Ten Thousand Fair, duet with Michel (2nd daughter of King Saul) and David, from the oratorio Saul. Libretto by Charles Jennes + "Davideis" by Abraham Crowley. First performed January 16, 1739 at King's Theatre, Haymarket, London. Michel: Elizabeth Gale, mezzo-soprano; David: Paul Esswood, countertenor. Live performance.

Michel:
Oh fairest of ten thousand fair,
Yet for thy virtue more admir'd!
Thy words and actions all declare
The wisdom by thy god inspir'ed.

David:
Oh lovely maid, thy form beheld,
Above all beauty charms our eyes;
Yet still within that form conceal'd
Thy mind, a greater beauty, lies.

Both:
How well in the does Heav'n at last
Compensate all my sorrows past.
