ArtSea Inks and Material, a Colorful, Sustainable Solution for 3-D Printing
Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory developed ArtSea Inks and Material, a seaweed-based solution for printing 2-D and 3-D medical models and art sculptures. Unlike current practices, ArtSea Inks and Material don’t require high heat or unsustainable fossil fuel-laden plastic materials to produce non-toxic, durable structures. The inventions are considered “bioinks” because they are made from alginate, a low-cost, widely available, and non-toxic sodium salt extracted from brown seaweed. Art Sea Inks and Material are available for licensing and are ideal for everything from research and STEM education to DIY printing and art projects.
