5 Personal Finance Books That Changed My Life

If you’ve already finished watching Tiger King on Netflix then you might have run out of things to do. So I thought today would be a good day to introduce you to a few books that were a huge part of my growth financially.

One of these books actually turned out to be the very thing that catalyzed my desire to learn more about money and essentially turned on the light bulb inside of my head.

I can’t imagine where I would be if I didn’t stumble upon books like these when I was a beginner so I wanted to put together a little reading list for you that I really think has the power to impact your lives.

I’ve picked out 5 of my favourite reads to start with and even threw in a sixth as a bonus that isn’t actually a finance book but can give you a really interesting perspective on money.

The Wealthy Barber Returns - Dave Chilton

The first book on my list provided the introduction to personal finance that I needed. It was written in a very casual and conversational manner that made the intimidating subject much more easy to approach. It was even funny! This happens to be the very first book I recommend most people read because I think it perfectly eases you into the material and then you can decide where you want to delve deeper intro from there.

The Millionaire Teacher - Andrew Hallam

I picked up the second book on my list because I wanted to learn more about investing. This one is definitely one of my all time favourites because it introduced me to the concept of index funds and passive investing. It also showed me my first taste of what financial independence looked like. The author happened to amass enough wealth over a short period of time by following some good but basic financial habits that he was able to retire early on a teacher's salary.

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing - John Bogle

Being very intrigued in index investing now, I wanted to learn more about the actual research and data that was supporting using index funds to invest. That's when I found the third book on my list. This one provided all the data and evidence that I needed to solidify my stance on passive investing being the best way to invest for the long term. If you're at all skeptical about index investing I highly recommend reading this one.

I will Teach You to Be Rich - Ramit Sehti

At this point I wanted to learn more about FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early). So I kept reading relentlessly. Eventually I ended up reading the fourth book on my list as I had seen it recommended in countless other places. At first, I was a little skeptical because of the name of the book. But after learning more about the author I realized that I actually liked him and decided to read it. This book provides a detailed step by step plan of how to get your financial life together. Just keep in mind it is targeted towards Americans so if you're one of my Canadian viewers you may or may not want to pass on it.

The Millionaire Next Door - Thomas Stanley

This book is a little different from the others on the list. It's less of a how-to and more of an interesting look at the "secret" millionaires in America. These millionaires are living in plain sight but you might not notice them at first glance. And that's because they don't live in a way you might expect from a millionaire. I won't spoil too much of the book but it expands your mind to realize that almost anyone can become a millionaire by just applying some consistent and simple finance habits for life.
