The reservoir of the heart lung machine explained. Part 5.
THIS VIDEO IS NOT SPONSORED
Normal venous drainage relies on gravity and height differences between the venous cannula tip and the venous reservoir blood level to facilitate venous drainage and the reservoir to the patient height distance is nearly 30-40 inches. There are two types of reservoirs in use in cardiopulmonary bypass. the first is called the closed system or the collapsible system and the other is call the open or the hardshell container system.
The reservoir functions as a receiving chamber for venous return from the patient and other sources like the vent cardiotomy etc, facilitates a venous bubble trap, provides a convenient place to add drugs, fluids and blood to the system, allows to sample blood for various reasons and adds storage capacity to the system. • This open hardshell reservoir systems facilitates the capability of vacuum-assisted venous drainage (VAVD) which are of three types.
1. VAVD
2. Kinetic-assisted venous drainage (KAKD)
3. Roller assisted VAD.
this video also discusses the various other safety and important functions of the reservoir and the precautions one need to take in the best interest of the patient.
