The Heart Lung Machine for beginners. Part 1

The heart lung machine is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century and has made heart surgery available all over the globe. The term "perfusion" is derived from the French verb 'perfuse' meaning to 'pour over or through'. Trained technicians called perfusion technologists manage the physiological and metabolic demands of the patient while the cardiac surgeon operates on the heart. They deserve lots of respect.
Many events happened in1953 like the discovery of the DNA and conquest of Mount Everest. LIkewise the same year this machine was successfully tested by Dr John Gibbon. When a patient's blood is continuously removed and returned through plastic tubing to perform an artificial organ function on the blood, it is called "extra-corporeal circulation (ECC)" - outside the body blood circulation..Various types of blood pumps are available for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The ideal pump for CPB must be able to pump blood at a flow rate of 7 L/min against a pressure of 500 mm Hg, not damage the cellular or acellular components of blood, should not contaminate the permanent parts of the pump and should be manually operable in case power failure.
