The Last Tiger | Katie Cannon | TEDxRaleigh

Katie Cannon's talk about the last remaining tigers in the wild, and those held in captivity, will make you sad, and then angry. Experience what it's like to spend your life trying to hold on to the last remaining tigers. Or are they?

Katie Cannon was a special education teacher for 5 ½ years in a Raleigh public school. After volunteering at Carolina Tiger Rescue for nearly 2 years, she made a career change and became Carolina Tiger Rescue’s Education Director.

Carolina Tiger is the only wild cat sanctuary in North Carolina which fits the federal definition of a true sanctuary. Having seen first-hand how children can harness their passion to move mountains, Katie believes that a better future for tigers – both in captivity and in the wild – is in the hands of younger generations.

Wild tigers need advocates now or extinction is inevitable. Help can begin right here in the United States, where more tigers live in captivity than in their native, wild habitats around the world. Helping children understand the problems that both captive and wild tigers face, and more importantly, giving kids simple solutions that they can act on is Katie’s goal as the coordinator of summer camps, field trips, and outreach programs that reach over 4,000 children each year.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
