Back in the day, plumbers used to solder everything, which makes it less than ideal for working on and replacing in the future. The technology at the time was a seat and washer that required turning the handle multiple times to get the valve opened or closed. In this short, I cut off the old soldered valve and replaced it with a threaded ball-valve design that will last decades, but when the time comes to replace it, all the next guy will have to do it unthread it and thread a new one on!
