Orbital or Detail Sander and trying Oxalic Acid "wood lightener"

This is one of the first pieces my husband and I purchased with our first baby in mind (didn't know we would have 2 at the time.) We want a sturdy coffee table that doesn’t have any sharp edges and would last. Well, it certainly fit the bill. When our kids were little, they spent a great deal of time around this table. Using it for balance as they learned to stand and walk and then it became their play table. The pink and green scribbles on its side illustrate its use by tiny toddlers.

In 2014, we were temporarily living in an apartment, when a tornado swept through our area. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and it only crashed trees into about six homes. Unfortunately, ours was one of them. Of the few possessions that were salvageable, that table was most important to me. It was a link to our kids being little and our very first home as a family. A couple of years later the Great Flood of 2016 happened in Louisiana. This time our home was spared but my husband's business was not. My dad was living in Florida and felt like the weather was trying to tell us something. We moved into his place and that is where we got the coffee table we use now. But I couldn't part with the old table. Within a year we fixed up and sold my dad's place and were able to get two smaller inland homes. We inherited his larger coffee table, and he got one with the place he bought. So, we still had the older one. That is how it ended up on our lanai. It served as a table I could do projects on until it was eventually taken over by plants ;)

My hope is to keep it essentially the same sturdy chunky table with only minor reminders of what it has been through so that someday it will find a place in one of my kids' homes, supporting the next generation as they first learn to walk and color well outside the lines.

Some things I learned from this:
1. Tiny stains can be an indication of larger stains a little further below the surface. If you aren't going to stain the piece it is probably best to use a bit of wood lightener before you apply an oil that might lift the larger stain up.
2. Bleach for clothing is NOT the same. I have used it on one other piece and it got the job done but the wood was left much drier. Too much of the clothing bleach can lead to brittle wood.
3. A detail sander is nice but isn't perfect. If you're on a budget a slightly pricier orbital sander can get more done.
