World Thrombosis Day | Understanding why some people get blood clots
World Thrombosis Day took place on 13th October 2022. Its purpose is to raise awareness of blood clots in veins (venous thromboembolism). This is an important issue because venous thromboembolism is the leading cause of preventable death in hospitals in the UK. There are more than 32,000 cases of venous thromboembolism in hospitals in the UK each year with mortality of about 10%. In the United States venous thromboembolism results in more deaths than the combined total from AIDS, breast cancer and traffic accidents.
The first step in doing something about this is understanding the causes of this disease. In this fascinating lecture, you will learn about blood clots and the strategies for prevention and treatment.
