A Beast On The H-71

Taken a few nights prior, I head out after dark to chase yet another night move of local NS H-71. Running the full length of the Portland Secondary, (Phillipsburg NJ to Portland PA) the train switches a customer in Portland before returning home. Although, on this night in particular, a familiar locomotive is among the consist - NS 3381. Join in on the chase as I capture the two EMDs running from Portland to Martins Creek PA with this unique unit on the head end.

For those who are unaware, SD40-2 #3381 was dubbed "The Beast" a few years ago by me, after it collided with a loaded tri-axle dump truck on this line in 2015. Of course, she received some front end damage, but the truck she hit was totaled. The rig mentioned was only a few weeks old, and when hit, had its frame bent into the shape of a banana. Furthermore, multiple engineers have reported this unit to be a very great puller, and a favorite among crews and yards alike. Fitted with a unique sounding backwards RS3L, I gave her the name "The Beast". Originally started as a joke, it is now used by some railroaders and a few railfans as well. Thanks for watching!
