Become a Lawyer In France as a Foreigner|| law school In France 🇫🇷

Educational Requirements:
Right after high school, french people go get their 3 year licence in law that is if they already know the path they want to take.Licence here is equivalent to a bachelors degree. Then after the licence,M1 and M2 which stands for master 1 and master 2. master 1 is simply the first year of a master program and master 2 is the second year. But mind you, it is not a given that you will go directly to a master 2 once you are done with the m1.You would have to do a separate application to get a place in the m2 program. This does not only apply to the law programs, but all other masters programs.so when You do m1 and m2 in France, the 2 has to be related.Usually in m1, you start with a general law course. Eg . business law then in the second year, there is more indepth specialisation eg within business law, you can specialise in finance law tax law etc .

Side note, to become a lawyer, m2 is not a must, as m1 is sufficient to take the bar exam. Now, most lawyers here do the m2 to give them a competitive edge ,so eventhough doing an m2 is not required, it is very much recommended.
if you do not have a law degree and you are coming from outside france, this is what you do.

In France, you can do m1 and go ahead to find a job with it. However, i rarely meet people who have just m1.most people go ahead to do m2.So going back to our topic of law school. You have to have an m1 and/or m2 in a relevant program. For example, you can do your bachelors degree program in economics, geography, biochemistry etc. Then all of a sudden you have an epiphany in life and decide to seek legal enlightenment and wants to become a lawyer, you absolutely need a 1 or 2 year master program in a law related field like, masters in international law, human rights law, business law etc. so doing a law related masters opens the channel for you to be eligible to start your process of becoming a lawyer.
Now lets talk about the licensing requirements

In France, there are 2 examinations which are very vital to be called to the bar. The first is the entrance exams which is known as the CRFPA……… and the second is the final exam CAPA
So right after m1, you are eligible to take the entrance exams and you have to prepare for that exam within a university, when i say this, i mean, there are classes held in universities or other institutions for preparations for the entrance exam. These institutes are known as EIJ: Institute d’etude judiciare : You can attend this school to become a judge or a public notary, it is not only for lawyers.
A student typically studies from 6 months to 1yr before they sit the bar exam.
If this exam is passed, then you will enter into a bar school.

So now you are in a bar school, what does it entail?
6 months of classes
6 months of internship: can be anywhere but not a french law firm
6 months of internship: Must be in a french law firm
Approx 4 months of exams for capa
Then you play the waiting game, because you would have to wait a whole month to see if you passed or not
Once you are done with this exam and have passed , you go to a place called the l’ordre des avocat which is the administrative authority and ask for a swearing in ceremony date which you wud have to pay 800 euros.
For Foreign lawyers.

Now if you are a lawyer admitted to a bar other than a french bar, that is, if you are a lawyer in your home country, and you would very much love to practice law in France, there is a special exam called article cent made up of 2 written exams, and 2 oral exams. If you are successful in these, then you become a lawyer.Quite straight forward huh? Well you have to remember these examinations are conducted in french and you must therefore sharpen your french language skills before you take them.
Now lets talk moneyyyy
Tuition fees in france is typically on the lower side when it is compared to tuition in the us,uk,canada etc. so for the licence which is equivalent to a bachelors degree, its typically under 500 euros for french and EU students and for foreign students it is btn 3000 and 4000 euros.
For the m1 and m2, it is less than 800 euros per year and for foreign students, it is between 3000 and 4000 euros per year.

For both French and foreign applicants, there is a fee of 140 euros to register for the bar exam without the option for preparation, and 1000 euros with preparatory classes. However,if you are a scholarship student, you only pay 600 euros.
And for bar school, it is 1700 euros.
