The 2019 Scottish Sailing Trip. Episode 5. Loch Stockinish, Scalpay, The Shiants & Loch Claidh
In 2019 we took three months out to go sailing. This was the opportunity of a lifetime. Join us by watching our videos that cover our trip sailing the west coast of Scotland, the Hebrides and the Orkney Islands.
As we prefer to visit some very remote places, we chose to use a yacht as our means of transport and accommodation. As well as sailing, our videos also feature us exploring ashore by foot, by folding bicycle as well as paddling our kayak. We really like to immerse ourselves in these remote destinations, observing their wildlife, natural beauty and history. As a Photographer, I love the challenge of capturing the essence of the locations we visit.
In This Episode:
Sailing From Taransay To Loch Stockinish, Isle of Harris
Walking The Scholars Trail
Sailing From Loch Stockinish to Plocropol (Plocrapool)
Scalpay, The Heritage Trail & Eilean Glas Lighthouse
The Birds of the Shiant Islands
The Anchorage of Eilean Thinngarstaigh, Loch Claidh
In this video, we start out on the west coast of the Outer Hebrides, with 19 to 20 knot winds and sailing under Genoa only. At 5 knots, we head for the Stanton Channel to seek shelter on the East Coast of Harris.
We make for the tricky entrance of Loch Stockinish on the Isle of Harris. Ashore we walk the excellent Scholars Trail. It's called the Scholars Trail because it was built for the school children to get from little remote villages to slightly less remote villages to get to the school. It must have taken quite a lot of work and is still in excellent condition many decades later.
We head on to Plocropol and the Isle of Scalpay. On the way, Susie makes bread while we sail. Ashore we cycle then walk the Heritage Trail to Eilean Glas Lighthouse. This is the site of the first lighthouse from the northern Lighthouse Board on the west coast of Scotland.
We then beat to Winward in six knots of wind to the Shiant Isles, which is a bird watcher’s paradise.
It's just fascinating sitting there surrounded by amazing bird life. There are thousands and thousands of razor bills, as well as puffins and many other breeds.
After a lunch stop, we head for one of our favourite anchorage of Eilean Thinngarstaigh, in Loch Claidh on the Isle of Lewis.
