FAQ
Q. What Camera Gear Do You Use?
A. Warning: You are probably going to be disappointed if you want some top tips on latest action cameras! Most videography and photography in our videography is taken with ye-olde Olympus Stylus Tough TG-830, which we purchased around 2003!. For stills it has 16 megapixels & 5 x Zoom and for video 1080HD @ 29.97fps. Its advantages of being small, light, waterproof, shock-resistant and we will not cry over the cost when it expires. Downside is it has no external mic input, so poor sound in wind and very average picture quality!
When conditions are not challenging (a rare event!), I get out my Canon 5D MK4 (with L series lenses) for B-Roll, interviews, and photos. For stills it has 30.4 megapixels full-frame sensor. For Video it can do 4K, but currently I use 1080HD at 30fps. Advantages are excellent picture quality & external mic sound. Disadvantages is it is so heavy you cannot easily use it hand-held and it is so expensive I would cry for a month if I broke it!
We sometimes use our iPhones. We have the ultra-modern 6S and 6S plus! They are great for macro.
I also own a “no pro”, which is a dodgy Chinese knock-off of a Go-Pro. Its cheap rubbish, with terrible battery life and picture quality. However, I used if for underwater photography and sometimes strap it to the handlebars of my bicycle. It is so unreliably; I do not use it anymore. However, it has made me hungry for a proper action camera.
Open to offers if a camera manufacturer wants to support our channel!
Q. What ground tackle do you use for anchoring?
A. We have a Rocna Anchor, Galvanised, 20Kg (45lbs). Windlass is a Lofrans Tigres 12V 1500W with 80m x 10mm DIN766 grade 40 calibrated chain. When we bought her, we had 16Kg CQR with 8mm chain and manual windlass. It was a lot of effort to weigh anchor and was marginal on holding as Spearax is heavy for her length with a lot of windage.
