மனித வாழ்க்கையை செம்மைப்படுத்துவதிலும், மனித நாகரிகத்தை வழிமொழிவதிலும் தத்துவஞானிகளின் பங்கு அளப்பறியது. வரலாற்றின் பல்வேறு காலகட்டங்களில் பல தத்துவஞானிகள் உதித்திருக்கின்றனர். உலகின் சிந்தனையை பல்வேறு வழிகளில் செம்மைப்படுத்தியிருக்கின்றனர். அவர்களுள் தலையாயவர் தத்துவஞானிகளின் தந்தை என்று போற்றப்படுபவரும், கிரேக்கத்தின் புகழை உலகெல்லாம் பரவச்செய்தவருமான சாக்ரடீஸ். ஒரு சாதாரண குடும்பத்தில் கி.மு.469 ஆம் ஆண்டு பிறந்தார் சாக்ரடீஸ். ஏழ்மையில்தான் பிறந்தார் வறுமையில்தான் வாழ்ந்தார். இளவயதில் ராணுவ வீரராக இருந்து ஏதென்ஸுக்காக பல போர்களில் பங்கெடுத்தார். சாக்ரடீஸ் வாழ்க்கையைப்பற்றி அதிகமாக சிந்தித்தார், எதையுமே வித்தியாசமாகவும் சிந்தித்தார் அவரது சிந்தனைகள் அந்த காலகட்டத்தில் உண்மை என நம்பப்பட்டவைகளின் அஸ்திவாரங்களையே ஆட்டம் காணச்செய்தன. வாழ்வின் உண்மைகளை கண்டறிய வேண்டும் என்ற அதீத தாகம் சாக்ரடீஸுக்கு இருந்தது.
