Mariupol Avostal attacks from Russian backed forces rage on as Ukrainian forces shelter inside
Mariupol Mayor Advisor said on Tuesday, Avostal steel plant attacks from Russian backed forces are unceasing.
Petr Andryushchenk, the advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, shared a video showing heavy artillery and aviation shelling the plant.
He said "attempts to storm on the ground continue to be unsuccessful, in addition to the military, and there are at least 100 civilians inside the plant."
Ukrainian fighters at the besieged Azovstal steel plant in the southeastern port of Mariupol, who are the last holdout against Russian forces in the city, vowed on Sunday to continue fighting as long as they are alive.
"We will always continue to fight for as long as we are alive for justice, to repel the Russian occupiers and to bring out civilians and wounded soldiers," Captain Sviatoslav Palamar, a deputy commander of Ukraine's Azov Regiment, told an online news conference.
Palamar, who warned the regiment was under intense shelling, urged for the international community to help to evacuate wounded soldiers from the plant.
Illia Samoilenko, a fighter with the Azov Regiment who also took part in the virtual conference, said they still had weapons, munitions and water, and were prepared to fight as long as they must.
Samoilenko said surrender was not an option for Azov fighters.
"We do not have high chances of survival if we are captured. Surrender for us is unacceptable because we cannot grant such a big gift to the enemy. Every person that is captured is the exchange fund," Samoilenko said, calling on the Ukrainian government to rely more on continuing fighting against Russian forces than hopes that Moscow can be pacified by negotiations.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a late night address on Saturday that more than 300 civilians had been rescued from the Azovstal plant. He said authorities would now focus on evacuating the wounded and medics, and helping residents elsewhere in Mariupol and surrounding settlements to safety.
Russian President Vladimir Putin told his armed forces on Monday (May 9) they were fighting for their country at a parade of Russian firepower in Moscow, while his troops stepped up their 10-week-old assault on Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said heavy fighting was underway in eastern Ukraine and warned people to take cover from expected missile strikes as Moscow marked the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two.
Mariupol is key to Moscow's efforts to link the Crimean Peninsula and the parts of the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk in Donbas controlled by separatists.
