Living in a National Forrest can be beautiful, but like living on the beach in Malibu it is not without risks, wildfires can sweep an area burning everything in its path, including homes. Woody Chain shows you some steps that you can do to Firewise your Homestead. There are several steps to Firewising a homestead, first being defensible space, second planting fire resistant trees to act as a radiant heat barrier between the home and forest. You are allowed and encouraged by law to create a defensible space around your home. If a wildfire does sweep through your area threatening your home, a firefighter just like me will access the home, if you did not make an effort to defend your home ahead of time to protect against wildfires, why should we risk our lives now to defend it, so we will on to the next home. We have to pick defensible space to make a stand to defend a structure, if there is no barrier, we cant defend it, so naturally we will pick the best places to make a stand against the advancing flames. I don't know about you, but I am of the mindset that I want the firefighters to pick my home to make their stand from, rather than not.
Clearing a space and planting the right trees can make all the difference in the world if you have this threat to deal with when things get hot and dry late in the summer.
