Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman) is a mukim and an island in Rompin District which lies off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in the South China Sea. It's a nature reserve, ringed by beaches.
Tioman Island is known for its dive sites, which have corals, as well as shipwrecks. The island is covered in tropical rainforests. The Juara Turtle Project is a hatchery that protects and studies sea turtles.
Tioman Island has four main villages, with Kampung Tekek being the largest and the main city, however for this trip we stayed in Kampung Salang, the other two being Kampung Juara and Kampung Batang.
Pulau Tioman is surrounded by numerous coral reefs, making it a popular scuba diving, snorkelling, and surfing spot.
In the 1970s, TIME Magazine selected Tioman as one of the world's most beautiful islands.
Tioman Island used to host both the British and Japanese navies during World War Two, as well as being the location where the South Pacific movie was filmed in 1958.
Although Tioman Island is part of Pahang State, it is geographically closer to Johor State.
Pulau Tioman is a duty-free island acclaimed as a geological wonder, ecological paradise and one of Southeast Asia's most beautiful travel destinations.
The tourist season peaks between May and August, when the weather generally displays the least rainfall.
The monsoon winds begin to blow from October, bringing heavy rain and strong waves until January.
We took Bluewater Express from Mersing for a price of RM40/person with an additional RM5 marine park conservation fee. Bluewater Express ferry tickets and the marine park conservation permit may be obtained at counters within Mersing Harbour Center, a commercial complex opposite the Mersing Ferry Terminal. The doors open from 06:00 AM onwards for visitors to catch the earliest ferry but this time the earliest ferry was 10:30 AM.
Since we did not book any hotel online, we had to go around Kampung Salang and look for available rooms, the main resort was almost fully booked, luckily we got an even cheaper deal at Ella's Place for RM60/Night. The room has a sea view with aligned palm trees.
We wanted to go for the Island tour but it is only available around 09 to 10 AM so we decided to go for snorkelling.
We swam from Kampung Salang Beach to Soyak Island, experiencing beautiful coral views.
At Soyak Island we climbed the rocks to get a greater overview of the place.
We finished off the day by watching sunset and having dinner at Salang Dreams Restaurant.
