'Bring back Trump': Elon Musk urged to reinstate former president on Twitter

Prominent conservative commentators have joined a chorus of supporters calling on Twitter's largest shareholder Elon Musk to resurrect the account of former US President Donald Trump.

The billionaire Tesla and SpaceX founder recently bought a 9.2 per cent stake in Twitter and has been elevated to the social network company's board.

The stake in Twitter Inc is valued at close to $AUD4 billion and gives him more shares than founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey.

In a series of tweets Mr Musk questioned the company's commitment to "free speech".

On March 25 he tweeted out a poll relating to its importance.

“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy,” he said.

“Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?

"The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”

More than two million users voted on the poll, with "no" being the overwhelming result.

Donald Trump's supporters have decided to cash in on the eccentric billionaire's own commitment to free speech by immediately requesting he reinstate the 45th US president's profile.
