A little about the artist:

Farhad Moshiri (1963 – July 17, 2024) was a distinguished Iranian artist celebrated internationally for his innovative fusion of painting and installation art. Based in Tehran, his work intricately weaves the aesthetics of Pop art with nuanced socio-political commentary, often connecting with the Hurufiyya movement's incorporation of calligraphy. Moshiri's passing at 61 marked a significant moment in contemporary Middle Eastern art, leaving behind a legacy of creations that invite viewers to explore layers of meaning beyond their initial visual appeal, engaging with both familiar Pop elements and the rich tradition of Arabic calligraphy.

Born in Shiraz, Iran, Moshiri's artistic journey included studying at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in the 1980s, where he experimented with installations, video art, and painting, earning his MFA in 1984. His pivotal return to Tehran in 1991 led to his widespread recognition for uniquely blending traditional Iranian artistic forms with the pervasive influence of globalized popular culture. Influenced early by his father's cinemas showcasing American films, and later by the experimental environment of CalArts, Moshiri's work became a conscious exploration of his cultural identity within a rapidly evolving global landscape, bridging Iranian tradition and Western pop culture.

Moshiri's artistic practice was remarkably versatile, encompassing installations, sculptures, film, and painting. He initially gained acclaim for his textured jar and bowl paintings, later incorporating unconventional materials like cake icing, Swarovski crystals, and even knives into his increasingly sculptural works. Transforming everyday items such as plastic pearls, glass beads, and Persian rugs into elaborate art became a hallmark of his style. He also embraced traditional Iranian crafts like hand embroidery, collaborating with artisans, and explored the beauty of script through calligraphy, notably in his iconic jar paintings where he employed unique aging techniques.

Characterized by a fascinating dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures, Moshiri's style is rooted in Pop art, using irony to combine Iranian artistic forms with global popular culture. His jar paintings, adorned with Persian calligraphy and proverbs, symbolized life and memory. Drawing from Iranian motifs and Western visuals, his art explored the tension between high and low art, often critiquing Western consumerism in Iran. Represented by prominent international galleries like The Third Line and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, and featured in collections like the British Museum, Moshiri's groundbreaking auction sales, including "Secret Garden" achieving one million dollars, underscore his significant artistic legacy and global impact.
