The Therapist Credentials Myth
Myth: Therapists with more advanced degrees are more effective.
It seems logical — more training, better therapist. But decades of research tell a different story.
What actually predicts whether therapy helps has nothing to do with the letters after someone’s name. It comes down to some very human qualities — empathy, the ability to really listen, to stay present with what’s hard without pulling away or jumping to advice.
Researchers call these “common factors.” And they matter far more than credentials.
So if you’re looking for a therapist, the most important question isn’t what degree they have. It’s how it feels to sit with them. Do you feel heard? Safe? Understood?
Those qualities are what actually help people change.
