George Gershwin (1898-1937) and Oscar Levant (1906-1972) were both children of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants and both active in popular and classical music. A close friend and associate of Gershwin, Levant was considered his most important interpreter after his early death.

Levant was a fascinating, complex personality: he studied composition with Arnold Schoenberg and composed successfully in various styles. With his caustic wit he was a household name on American radio and television. As an actor he appeared in well-known movies such as "An American in Paris". At the same time he was a very sensitive classical musician who, when he was in his prime, could play Debussy and Rachmaninoff beautifully. In the last decades of his life he was plagued by mental illness and addictions. He said of himself: "There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line."
