IS SPOTIFY MAKING LABELS OBSOLETE? What it means for artists

Spotify has been quietly making direct licensing deals with artists, which effectively cuts out the record labels from the equation. I talk about some of the implications for artists and for the music industry as a whole:

- Why this is a very good thing for artists, because it means they can have multiple offers and therefore leverage when negotiating with record labels and Spotify

- Why Spotify's curated playlists and cultural influence are their biggest advantage because they can largely replace the record label's marketing function

- Although Spotify insists that this doesn't make them a label (per their contracts, it's effectively the same thing IMO)

- Why the record labels may be shooting themselves in the foot and forcing Spotify to make this move
