Theory Lesson 2: Intervals - the building blocks of music theory

Intervals are the basic building blocks and foundation of everything we play in music. There are twelve intervals, each has a unique sound. Each interval is defined by its distance from the root note.

Here is an overview: Note that I've used lower case "m" for minor and upper case "M" for Major. Also note that I've used the flat sign (b) to notate minor and diminished intervals and the sharp sign (#) to notate Major and Augmented intervals.

Augmented = an increase in pitch
diminished = a decrease in pitch

m2 = minor 2nd F to Gb
M2 = Major 2nd F to G
m3 = minor 3rd F to Ab
M3 = Major 3rd F to A
4 = 4th F to Bb
A4 = Augmented 4th/tritone F to B
d5 = diminished 5th/tritone F to Cb
5 = 5th F to C
A5 = Augmented 5th F to C#
m6 = minor 6th F to Db
M6 = Major 6th F to D
m7 = minor 7th F to Eb
M7 = Major 7th F to E
8 = Octave F to F

Practice these by saying them and playing. Also by writing them out starting on all twelve notes of music.

Example: A

A to Bb m2
A to B M2
A to C m3
A to C# M3
A to D 4th
A to D# A4
A to Eb d5
A to E 5th
A to E# A5
A to F m6
A to F# M6
A to G m7
A to G# M7
A to A 8

After A, try writing them out from A# or Bb, then B, etc...
