Theory Lesson 9: 9th Chords Summary and Formulas
9th chords are great sounding extensions. We learned in lesson 7 about sus2 chords, which add the same extension (2/9), but by removing the Major 3rd of the chord. 9th chords are formed by adding the 2/9 color tone to an existing triad, major or minor or to an existing 7th chord, major, minor, or dom7.
Here are the formulas for each example:
Add9 chords are formed by taking a Major triad and then adding the 2/9 tone to it.
Cadd9 = 1 3 5 9 (C E G D)
Aadd9 = A C# E B
Gadd9 = G B D A
Fadd9= F A C G
Dadd9 = D F# A E
Eadd9 = E G# B F#
Examples of add9 chords are found in a lot of 90's music, singer songwriter, Folk, and Rock.
Good Riddance: Green Day
Collide : Howie Day
Jane Says: Jane's Addiction
Semi-Charmed Life: Third Eye Blind
Why Georgia: John Mayer
Dust In The Wind: Kansas
minor add9 chords are formed by taking the minor triad and adding the 2/9 color tone to it. The two easiest examples are Amadd9 and Emadd9 because those are accessible in the open position.
Cmadd9 = 1 b3 5 9 (C Eb G D)
Amadd9 = A C E B
Dmadd9 = D F A E
Emadd9 = E G B F#
Maj9 chords are formed from 7th chords, then adding the 2/9 color tone to it.
CMaj9 = 1 3 5 7 9 (C E G B D)
AMaj9 = A C# E G# B
DMaj9 = D F# A C# E
FMaj9 = F A C E G
GMaj9 = G B D F# A
EMaj9 = E G# B D# F#
Dom9 chords are formed by taking the Dom7 formula and adding a 2/9 tone to it.
C9 = 1 3 5 b7 9 (C E G Bb D)
A9 = A C# E G B
G9 = G B D F A
F9 = F A C Eb G
D9 = D F# A C E
E9 = E G# B D F#
minor 9th chords are formed by taking a minor 7th chord and adding the 2/9 color tone to it. (I didn't show any examples of these in the video because I'm trying to keep things simple and based off of open chords)
Cm9 = 1 b3 5 b7 9 (C Eb G Bb D)
Am9 = A C E G B
Dm9 = D F A C E
Em9 = E G B D F#
