Millborn Bunker Buster (Forage Sorghum)

Hi. I'm Matt Metzger, Forage and Cover Crop Specialist with Millborn Seeds.

We're out here today in a field of Millborn's Bunker Buster BMR Forage Sorghum. We're at the end of September right now. This was planted at the beginning of June, after a rye harvest. So it does fit the double crop option. And you can see it puts on a lot of growth in a relatively short period of time.

We'll be in here in a couple weeks, chopping this off and putting it in a pile for silage. On that note, with the true forage sorghum vs the sudan hybrid you are more or less limited to chopping for silage as your harvest option. Just because, you can see, this is almost like a corn plant. We've got a pretty coarse stock. It's gonna be a struggle to try to dry that down for hay.

But if you want to put up a lot of tons of silage, this is a nice option. There's a lot of growth out here. And the other thing to think about is it does have the BMR trait so the quality you are going to get from this feed product is not bad either. We'll have a more digestable fiber with that product.

And sorghum silage, if you've never smelled it before, you open a bag of sorghum silage...it smells sweet. Cattle really go for it once you get them started on it.

So the plan is to put this is in a TMR with corn silage with a little bit of distillers, run stock cows through the Winter and through calving. And it should make a pretty nice ration. Cows should keep their condition really well on this.

Like I mentioned, we did come in after rye, we're doing some double cropping here on this particular operation. And it's worked out really well the last couple years for these guys.

I spoke with them and they are pretty impressed with the yields they've got from the rye harvest and then from the sorghum too. You're getting well over 20 tons of feed on a wet basis harvested per year. And that works out pretty well.

If feeding cattle is your main goal, take a look at doing some of this double cropping. Using a warm season and a cool season or a winter annual in an operation like that, or using them together like that, it just makes and it works well to put up a lot of feed.
