Interstitial Lung Disease affects pulmonary tissue when the lung tissue becomes hard and fibrous. Interstitial Lung Disease may be limited to the lung, or it can be related to a condition that may affect other parts of the body, such as rheumatoid arthritis or sarcoidosis.

The symptoms of interstitial lung disease are:
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing typically non-productive
- Decreased exercise tolerance
- Fatigue
- Weight loss

Causes of interstitial lung disease (ILD):
-Some people develop ILD as a due to an autoimmune disease (the immune system harms the body).
- ILD is also caused by breathing in harmful substances such as coal dust, asbestos, tobacco smoke or hairdressing chemicals.
- ILD also may occur as genetic.
- Idiopathic means the cause is not known and it usually affects people over 60 years of age.
