Early liver cancers can present as suspicious nodules in the liver on routine ultrasound. If there are risk factors for liver cancer such as hepatitis B or underlying liver cirrhosis or raised alpha-fetoprotein in the blood test, then diagnostic three dimensional dynamic imaging such as triphasic contrast CT abdomen or MRI abdomen should be done to confirm the diagnosis. Only, when there is a doubt in the diagnosis, then only liver biopsy can be attempted, which is usually required only in a small percentage of patients.
