On Sunday, Trump announced Project Freedom — a US Navy mission to escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz using military assets to break Iran's chokehold on global oil supply. Just hours earlier, Rubio had told reporters that Operation Epic Fury — the major combat phase of the war — was now over and the US had shifted to a defensive posture. Iranian President Pezeshkian pushed back immediately, calling US demands impossible.

Iran's Foreign Minister is now in Beijing for the first face-to-face talks with China since the war began. Oil prices retreated slightly on the pause announcement but remain around $100 a barrel. US petrol prices climbed to $4.48 a gallon. Global oil demand is now falling at the fastest rate seen outside the Covid pandemic. A previous US resolution at the UN Security Council to defend freedom of navigation was vetoed by China and Russia. 68 days. A major combat operation declared over.
