Is Capitalism Anti-Black?

The U.S. is a capitalist society – but does it need to be? The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed inequalities in the system, with Black and brown populations in the country more vulnerable to both the health and economic fallout. For example, unemployment due to COVID hit Black Americans harder than white, and Black people are more likely to be hospitalized than their white counterparts.

In this explainer, we look at the complicated relationship between capitalism, labor, exploitation and race – and whether the pandemic has inspired people to dream of a reality beyond capitalism.
