May 9, 2023
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to advance the Philippines’ priorities in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through regional and multilateral cooperation as he leaves the country to attend the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia from May 9-11, 2023.
Chaired by President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, the 42nd ASEAN Summit is the first of two ASEAN Summits this year. With the theme, ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,’ ASEAN Leaders will touch on issues in maintaining internal peace in Southeast Asia amid rising geopolitical issues in the Indo-Pacific region, while strengthening the regional bloc in becoming a fast-growing, inclusive and sustainable economic region.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), apart from asserting ASEAN’s centrality in the region, the Chief Executive also aims to push talks regarding various concerns, including long-term food and energy security, efforts toward economic recovery, combatting transnational crimes, upgrading of technical and vocational education and training, adopting climate and disaster resilient technologies transitioning to renewable and alternative energy technologies, and the protection of migrant workers, among others.
Furthermore, as he will be attending the 15th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia, President Marcos Jr. is seeking to discuss developments in the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025, with the goal of promoting economic development, strengthening connectivity and sustainably managing natural resources in the sub-region.
