Featuring the extraordinary Kamil Oshundara (@k6mil) in What’s Underneath is something we’ve wanted to do ever since we first interviewed them for a Closet video in 2019! But timing is everything, and the last 2 years have been monumental in Kamil’s journey to stepping into the most authentic, powerful version of themself, culminating in perhaps the biggest decision of their life earlier this year.
Despite the allure of the praise, opportunities and acceptance that Kamil’s conventional beauty had afforded them when they presented as a woman, this year, Kamil traded in their “pretty privilege” for the freedom of existing fully at home in their body and nonbinary identity. Rather than continuing to live out society’s and family’s expectations of them, Kamil chose to align with how they felt on the inside, owning the validity of their experience with gender dysphoria and lack of connection to their breasts, and deciding to get top surgery. Today, they are standing tall in their difference and radiating in the adrogynous body that they now feel is finally their own.
"I had been performing femininity and womanhood in a way they didn't feel in alignment with who I was...I woke up the day [after surgery] and I did not want to do anything to alter or harm my body for the first time. I had been dealing with dysmorphia and trying to have cis-ness fit me for 24 years of my life... The second I stood in such a large decision, it built my confidence: I no longer have to do anything that makes me feel out of alignment with myself. And I think that a lot of cis people might take that feeling for granted.., The feeling of just waking up and ‘this makes sense.’ I didn't even know that I didn't have that until I got it. And I was like, oh my God, thank you.”
If anyone in your life could use a reminder that standing in your true self is the portal to your power, please share Kamil’s video and show them some love in the comments.
