Gary Puckett and the Union Gap were playing wherever they could when they got discovered. They got their big break while they were playing a gig inside of a bowling alley. IN fact they signed the record contract inside the same bowling alley about a month later they hit the charts with fury, with 6 consecutive gold hits and actually outsold the Beatles in 1968. Young Girl was the big hit for them in 68 going all the way to #2. I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. In 1968, Gary Pucket and the Union Gap sold more records than the Beatles He would finish the 60s with 6 straight gold hit singles putting him in a category with very few artists from that time. None of it went to his head. I had a chance to interview Gary and found him to be one of the most humble, down to earth people I’ve ever talked with. He had so many great stories which you’ll hear next including the story of his biggest hit ever Young Girl. Young Girl has been the subject of some controversy over the years because people refuse to listen to the words…which is about a guy who is smitten with a girl who gives him the impression she is older than she is.

When He finds out she is under age he tells her no way. It was actually written by producer writer Jerry Fuller whom I also interviewed. Jerry had a massive hit with Ricky Nelson Travelin’ Man which was just used in Stranger things. He also wrote and produced Show and Tell for Al Wilson.
