Hepatitis C: From Discovery to Cure - a talk by Charles Rice, a Nobel Laureate
The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded Monday, Oct. 5, to three scientists for the discovery of hepatitis C virus, an insidious and deadly blood-borne virus. Among the three scientists is the virologist Charles M. Rice, PhD.
Dr. Charles M. Rice is Nobel Prize laureate whose main area of research is the Hepatitis C virus. He is a professor of virology at the Rockefeller University in New York City.
Rice is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, member of the National Academy of Sciences and was president of the American Society for Virology from 2002 to 2003.
Rice was awarded the prize along with Harvey J. Alter, MD, of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Michael Houghton, PhD, of the University of Alberta in Canada. In announcing the prize, the Nobel Assembly said the hepatitis C discovery had “made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives.”
Charles Rice spoke in 2016 at LUMS, through an online link, at the international workshop and symposium on "Modern strategies in drug discovery and vaccine design" organized by the Department of Biology, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering.
Charles Rice, in his amazingly clear and simple talk, describes his scientific journey od decades of investigating the hepatitis C virus and hence, laying the foundations of finding its cure. This is some of the work that continues in numerous research laboratories worldwide, including those at SSE, LUMS.
At LUMS SSE, we have several research groups working on virus modeling, vaccine development and drug design. We are planning the design of new research laboratories that are biosafe, and have initiated new research directions specifically focusing on the coronavirus (from the basic sciences, modelling and informatics perspectives).
In this video he talks about "Hepatitis C: From Discovery to Cure".
