How to ‘Check’ and Control your Jumps, Spins, and Footwork

You are going to hear the term ‘Checking’ quite a lot in your skating journey. Your coaches and instructors will tell you to check out of jumps and spins, and check during footwork elements and Moves In The Field. For figure skaters checking is defined as... “ Stopping or Controlling Rotation” . So when you land a jump or finish a spin, you will want to check out to stop the rotation. With footwork you will use a checking motion to control the rotation of the turn. Without using proper checking technique, you will not be able to maintain control of your body.
