New York, 1910.He was 6 years old.Already paying his own way. 🖤
New York, 1910. A little boy standing in a doorway. A stack of newspapers under his arm. Boots worn through at the toes. He is six years old and he has already learned that the world does not give you anything for free. 🖤
Newsboys were one of the most visible forms of child labor in early 20th century America. Boys as young as five and six worked the streets of major cities — waking before dawn to collect their papers, standing in all weather on street corners, shouting headlines to passersby.
They were paid per paper sold — not per hour. If they didn't sell, they didn't eat. Some days they sold everything. Other days they came home with papers they couldn't afford to return.
Lewis Hine photographed hundreds of newsboys across America. He noted their names, their ages, how long they had been working. This boy told him he had been selling papers for two years.
Two years. Since he was four.
He is looking at the camera with quiet dignity. He is not asking for sympathy. He is simply standing — doing his job — waiting for the next customer.
He deserved a school desk. Not a street corner. 🖤
