Just away from the dust and the hunger and the land that stopped giving. 🖤During the Great Depression, the American Midwest was hit by a catastrophic drought that turned fertile farmland into desert. Families who had farmed the same land for generations watched their crops die, their savings disappear and their futures collapse.Over 3.5 million people abandoned their homes and headed west — most to California — hoping to find work picking fruit and vegetables. They became known as Okies — a term used with contempt by those who didn't want them.These children had no say in any of it. They simply climbed into the truck when their parents told them to. They watched their home disappear in the rearview mirror. They slept on the side of roads. They ate whatever there was.That little boy standing by the truck is looking at the camera with curious eyes. He doesn't understand yet. He just knows they are moving again.Some families made it to California and found work. Many didn't.
