The Battle of Khanwa, fought on 16 March 1527 near Agra, changed the course of Indian history forever. This was not just a clash between Babur and Rana Sanga, but a defining moment between two eras—Rajput valour and Mughal modern warfare.
In this episode of Tarikh, we go deep into the fierce legacy of Rana Sanga—his rise, his unmatched bravery, his repeated victories, and his devastating loss at Khanwa. Known for his 80 battle scars, a lost arm, and a blind eye, Rana Sanga was a symbol of Rajput resilience. But he wasn’t fighting against just any invader—he was up against Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan.
We trace Babur’s early campaigns, his frustrations in Central Asia, and his growing ambitions in Hindustan. With the help of disillusioned Afghan chieftains and a controversial alleged invitation by Rana Sanga himself, Babur marched in—not just as a plunderer but as a conqueror.
But Khanwa wasn’t an ordinary battlefield. Babur brought with him the Rumi strategy—defensive formations, artillery barricades, and war tactics borrowed from the Ottomans. Despite a larger Rajput army, betrayal from allies like Silhadi Tomar turned the tide. A cannonball struck Sanga; Ajja Jhala fought in his stead. In the chaos, the Mughal forces gained the upper hand. And as Babur later claimed—he built a minaret of skulls from fallen Rajput soldiers.
We also examine whether the so-called alliance offer from Rana Sanga to Babur, as mentioned in the Baburnama, was real or rhetoric.
This episode explores a pivotal moment when the Mughal Empire cemented its foundation and India’s power dynamics shifted irreversibly. From Biana to Khanwa, from betrayal to bravery—this is the story of blood, iron, and strategy.
