'विद्ये विना मति गेली' Jyotiba Phule न होते तो औरतें, पिछड़ा वर्ग स्कूल का चेहरा न देख पाते
Episode No: 954
This is the story of Jyotirao Phule one of India's earliest and fiercest social reformers who challenged the deep-rooted caste hierarchy and gender discrimination of 19th century India. Born in 1827 in the village of Katgun, Phule’s life was marked by the dominance of Brahmin orthodoxy under British backed Peshwa rule in Bombay province.
Phule’s own brush with caste humiliation at a Brahmin friend’s wedding turned into a life-defining moment. From that day on, he vowed to fight for the rights of Shudras, women, and the oppressed. Together with his wife Savitribai, he opened the first girls’ school in Pune in 1848, followed by institutions for marginalized castes. Despite being ostracized, attacked, and humiliated, the couple’s determination remained unshaken.
Phule drew ideological strength from thinkers like Thomas Paine, and spiritual reformers like Buddha and Suhrawardi. His revolutionary book Gulamgiri and the founding of the Satyashodhak Samaj in 1873 laid the blueprint for caste annihilation and social equity. In this episode, we trace his journey: from being a gardener’s son to becoming the voice of voiceless millions. His advocacy for widow remarriage, child education, and orphan care continues to resonate today.
