Jablonski diagram/Photophysical processes/Fluorescence/Phosphorescence/Radiative and non-radiative

Jablonski diagram video describes the various photophysical processes
Radiative processes- Fluorescence process, phosphorescence process
Non-radiative processes - vibrational relaxation, internal conversion , inter-system crossing
You will be able to
draw Jablonski diagram
discuss the various transitions using Jablonski diagram
classify the radiative and non-radiative transitions
explain vibrational relaxation, internal conversion and inter-system crossing
elaborate the process of fluorescence and phosphorescence
Jablonski diagram is a pictorial representation of the energy diagram illustrating the various electronic and vibrational levels and different transitions occurring within them.
Radiation-less transition/Non-radiative transitions
(Only heat loss without emission of light)
Internal conversion
Transition from a higher vibrational level to lower vibrational level of same state. (e.g. from a vibrational level of S2 to a vibrational level of S1 with same energy).
This occurs in the range of 10-14 to 10-11 s
Inter-system crossing
Transition from a vibrational level of one state to a vibrational level of another state of same energy (e.g. a vibrational level of S1 to a vibrational level of T1 with same energy).
This occurs in the range of 10-11 to 10-6 s
Radiative transition/Radiation transition (emits light during transition)
Fluorescence
Transition from lowest vibrational level of S1 to any vibrational level of S0 by emitting light. Fluorescence stops right after the source of radiation is switched off. This occurs in the range of 10-9 to 10-6 s.
Fluorescent inks, paints, blue fluorescent dye in detergents, reflector plates in vehicles.
Radiative transition/Radiation transition (emits light during transition)
Phosphorescence
Transition from lowest vibrational level of T1 to any vibrational level of S0 by emitting light. Phosphorescence continues even after source is removed.
This occurs in the range of 10-6 to 10 s
Phosphorescent inks and paint in fire-extinguishers, clock dials etc., phosphorescent pigment “resin mold” used in glow-in-the-dark toys, stickers etc.
