Jeep Rolls Into Tree, Bursts Into Flames Killing 2 And Dog In El Cajon

EL CAJON, Calif. — Two people and a dog were killed in a horrific fiery crash early Monday morning after a Jeep veered off Interstate 8 in El Cajon, rolled multiple times, and slammed into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 3:25 a.m. on westbound I-8 near Mollison Avenue, where CHP officers were first to arrive on scene.

Authorities say the Jeep left the roadway for unknown reasons before overturning several times and crashing into a tree. The impact was so severe that the roof of the vehicle was sheered off during the collision.

According to CHP, the vehicle became engulfed in flames after the crash. Officers arriving at the scene attempted to assist the occupants but were unable to safely reach them due to the intense heat and fire conditions.

Both occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. CHP also confirmed that a dog inside the vehicle was killed in the crash.

The collision forced major traffic disruptions overnight, with only one westbound lane remaining open for a period of time while crews investigated and cleared the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by CHP.
