Speeding Driver Causes Wild Freeway Crash Leaving Vehicles Stacked On Top Of Each Other

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A bizarre late-night freeway crash in Bay Park left two vehicles overturned and stacked on top of one another, creating a scene first responders described as something they had rarely ever seen.

The crash happened around 10:42 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, near northbound Interstate 5 and Balboa Avenue in the Bay Park neighborhood.

According to CHP, officers had received multiple 911 calls reporting a female driver in a blue sedan was driving recklessly moments before the collision.

Investigators say the blue sedan sideswiped a black SUV, sending both vehicles crashing off to the side of the freeway.

In a shocking aftermath, both vehicles ended up overturned on their sides and wedged on top of each other. First responders at the scene reportedly said they had never seen vehicles land in such a position before.

Authorities believe the unusual crash position may have been caused by the angle and speed at which the sedan struck the SUV.

The male driver of the black SUV was able to self-extricate and suffered only minor injuries.

Firefighters had to rescue the female driver from the blue sedan before she was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

CHP is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Officials are reminding drivers to slow down and avoid reckless driving, warning that excessive speed can quickly turn a routine drive into a deadly situation.
