The Saffron Trail - 71 Miles from Southend to Saffron Walden

The Saffron Trail is a 71 mile waymarked long distance hike across Essex. Beginning at Southend, the trail follows the estuary past the fortress of Hadleigh Castle before crossing open countryside north into the city of Chelmsford, via the Crough Estuary. From here numerous little villages are visited, many with historic interest including multiple Anglo-Saxon churches and dozens of medieval buildings. Saffron Walden is the final destination, known thanks to its perfect soils and climate for growing the Saffron Crocus in the 17th and 18th Centuries.
