Building An Alaskan Log Cabin - Week 13 (The Clerestory Windows)
The clerestory windows are finally set and I am able to finish up various trim details on the roof. But the work is coming along nicely and I like the way the project is looking. Typically, on these type of projects, where the design is pretty much just in my head, I tend to work out the look of things as I go along. It is easier for me to visualize what modifications are needed when I am actually looking at the lot or the structure. When I started (for instance) I did not have the clerestory roof line in mind, but I wanted to get more natural light into the cabin. And since it was surrounded by tall spruce trees the upper windows seemed the best way to achieve it. And I did not have the sculpted rafter tails in mind either, but the rough-cut 2x12's just looked overbearing and I felt their appearance needed to be softened.
This weekend I am starting to build the detached mechanical building. It will house a small boiler, a hot water storage tank, a pressure tank and a small water softener. It should be an interesting project. Also, this week I ordered all the exterior electrical equipment to set up my yard pole, meter, service entrance and underground feeders. That project will happen in the next few weeks if all goes as planned. It will be nice to have permanent electricity although my 2000 watt Honda generator has done a great job so far.
And once again, just to clarify, this cabin is not remote or off-grid. It is on the outskirts of town where I live. Although it is small (385 sf) it will have all the amenities to live comfortably year around.
That was quite an earthquake we had yesterday. An 8.2 magnitude wopper. The biggest since 1964 (the year I was born). It occurred down by Dillingham though and the effects were not noticeable this far north.
Thank you my friends for your absolute amazing support of this channel. I am deeply honored. It has been such and enjoyable journey. The opportunity to visit with amazing people, all over the world, is a great privilege and remains one of my favorite things about this adventure.
Peace to you all from Alaska.
