Building An Alaskan Log Cabin - Week 13
This video shows a different side of this project. The installation of a water well is not necessarily scenic but it is an important aspect of the work. The water line in this video terminates above ground about 10 feet from the cabin. I plan to construct a small building there to accommodate the cabin's mechanical equipment, including the little boiler. All the piping connections to the cabin (from the mechanical building) will be run above ground in an insulated utilidor. The interior cabin will be dedicated to living space only.
Also, in order to clarify, this project is not an off-grid cabin. It is built on the outskirts of the community where I live. So far, all the power for the project has been provided by a small 2000 watt portable generator, but I plan to run permanent power to the lot in the near future.
The intro to this video was filmed two days ago on a work trip to Hughes. I grew up in a small Alaskan community and love the remote villages and their wonderful cultures. This video was promised to a couple of my viewers who are reading a book I recommended about the life of a remarkable family that lived on river you see in this video. The book is called "Shadows On The Koyukuk". It is about the life of Sydney Huntington, and is written by Jim Rearden. I can't recommend it highly enough. It is one of my favorites.
The windows for the cabin have finally arrived. That is exciting. However, I am going to take a couple of weeks break from this project and head up to the cabin in the mountains. I have several weeks of work to do there and the summers are short in those high elevations. I am taking my camera with me though, and plan to shoot the next few videos from there. I know you will enjoy the scenery. It is my favorite place on earth.
I appreciate you guys very much. Thanks for making this so much fun.
Peace.
