Principles of Weight Training: Progressive Overload (How To MAXIMIZE Your Progress!)
#powerlifting #bodybuilding #strengthtraining
The aim of this series is to detail the fundamental principles that drive success in the realm of weight training. The basic, major factors that will be covered here are really the meat and the potatoes of the game that will lead to the vast majority of your progress over time. Everything else is just noise. Get these things right consistently for moderate or long stretches of time and you will soon vastly overshadow pretty much everybody else you see at the gym.
In part 1 here we cover the concept of progressive overload. Progressive overload is really the king of the game when it comes to fitness because without utilizing it properly there really is nothing. There is no enhancement of physical fitness without creating a gradually overloaded stimulus for the body to slowly adapt to, and this is regardless of the physical endeavor.
Unfortunately, however, this concept is often highly misunderstood. In terms of the weight room, it is often wrongly boiled down to just constantly adding weight to the bar, but that's a fast ticket straight into a brick wall. Sure it works for a little while depending on how much of a novice that you are but eventually things need to become a little bit more nuanced than that.
There are plenty of other variables that can be tinkered with besides the load on the bar. Things like training volume, training frequency, and variation are all going to play a major role in this regard. Learning how to tweak and juggle these different variables effectively is what is going to allow you to drive consistent progress for the longest periods of time while avoiding the dreaded plateau that many lifters get stuck on forever.
In today's video I describe the intimate interplay between all these primary overload variables and I lay out a full sample training cycle that shows you how they can be manipulated in order to keep the gains train running indefinitely.
